Skate Withdrawal
I haven’t been on skates since the 19th and its driving me a bit insane! I’ve was out of town all last week and am now home. My wonderful boyfriend got me a gift certificate to the skate shop and I can’t wait to get some needed things.
I need a skate tool and some new wheels. I also would like to get a real toe guard even though I kind of like the duct tape. I think I would also like new laces as...

Before and After
I have so much to update. I’ve been pretty sick all weekend but still went to derby. So let’s see… Friday we went through what the tryout would be. It was simpler than I had expected but I can see how all of it is important. I only stayed an hour and then went home to bed.
Saturday I returned and had an amazing practice. Napoleon coached us and it was just great. We first did a slow pace line,...

Pre-Tryouts
So I went to practice last night cold and all. The first hour we just went over what the tryouts on Sunday will be like. My nerves have calmed down since I feel that I have little chance but after last night I’m even less nervous. It’s all fairly simple things I’ve been doing. I can see how these things will help then see potential in skaters but I was expecting it to be a bit...

FU Cold!!
They will be going over what will be going on at tryouts tonight. More reason then ever to go to practice tonight regardless of having a cold. I will be going home from work early to rest up and try to get a bit better. Then take meds and suck it up for 2 hours.
I am super excited and nervous. I asked if it was a bad idea for me to attempt tryouts and was told to give it a shot. So I will! I...

Go Away Cold, There be Practice Tonight!
Today I feel under the weather. All I want to do is go to practice tonight and do well. Yet I’m sick. I’m hoping that by the end of the day I’ll be feeling better. At least I hope I’ll be able to breathe with my mouth guard in. Tryouts are Sunday and I would like to not completely suck for them. I know that I still have a lot to learn before I’ll be considered for FreshMeat and that’s ok. I still...

Need More TIme
So due to the rink having odd hours I won’t be able to go skating until tomorrow at the soonest. I believe the rink hours begin at 8 so I will be volunteering at the hanger to help sell merchandise beforehand. I realized that this weekend is tryouts! I’m nervous to even go or attempt to actually tryout. After going to the few practices I’ve been to I don’t feel I would have a chance of making...
Saturdays Practice. Jam On!
Saturdays practice was wonderful. It was lead by Effen and I think she’s fantastic. I again got to practice early and was able to warm up. I will try to do this all the time as I think it makes a huge difference. We warmed up by pushing a partner around the track. So I paired up with one of the girls and we switched off pushing each other around the track. This sounds simple and for the most...

Friday Practice. Falling Can be a Good Option.
What a whirlwind of a weekend. I think I will start by talking about my practice on Friday. I was nervous but managed to enter the hanger and get my gear on. I was able to stretch and warm up before practice which was very helpful. For warm-ups we did 50 labs around the track. It sounds a lot easier than it is but I fell out of pace towards the end. I was able to keep up alright but man these...

Still Nervous
Practice tonight! I can’t wait until I’m no longer nervous about going to practice. I realize this is only my second one and I’m sure it’s normal to be nervous still. I just can’t wait until it’s all second nature.
I’m thrilled to be done with school for the moment so I can focus on skating. Tryouts are just a little over a week and I hope I can do fairly well.
Until after practice I leave you...

Butterflies
My nerves have started up again. I realized earlier today that tomorrow will be my second Wreckers practice. I know the butterfly feeling will wear off eventually just like it did after I went to a few derby classes. I’m sure this being the end of the quarter isn’t helping. I’m finishing up my final paper and it is due tomorrow. This means I haven’t been on my skates since Saturday! I think this...

The Windy City Rollers need our help getting the word out about league mate, Yvonne Johnson Hammer, she has been reported missing by her family. Law enforcement is currently treating her disappearance as a missing persons case. I hope she returns safely to her family, friends and league soon. I ask that anyone with any information about Yvonne’s where abouts contact the Chicago...

Lower Back Stretches by J-Bone
rollerderbywillsavemysoul:
I found a few great links that may help anyone that is experiencing that lower back pain. I heard quite a few of you Fresh Bloods talking about it, and I still hear some vets talk about it. While it’s completely normal for it to be hurting when you first start practicing and playing roller derby (before you build those muscles up), there are things you can do that...

1st practice with the Wreckers!
Saturday was my first practice with the Wreckers. I was very nervous and feared that everything I knew was not good enough. I feared being incompetent and just hoped I could keep up. I walked into the hanger and was hit with a wave of noise. They were having a coed scrimmage and the sound of skates on the floor and the shouting of the players was intense. I starred at the skates flying around the...

Joining Wreckers on Saturday!
I am nervous about Saturday. I finally get to go to Wreckers but this also means a step into the big kids pool of derby! This is thrilling and a bit terrifying all at the same time. So far everyone I have meet in derby is wonderfully nice and helpful. I already have a mentor and she seems very pleasant and willing to help. I have 1 friend in Wreckers as well though she may not be there due to...

Get on the Ball!
I want to prepare for tryout anyway I can. I have been skating at least 2-3 times a week including going to the Derby class. However, I feel that this isn’t enough. I had a hard time towards the end of the class on Saturday with my legs starting to give out. Not to mention being out of breath. I want to start working on my endurance level and muscle strength.
I think this means more work outs...

Endurance is a bitch!
Saturday lessons are the highlights of my week. I’ve been able to go early and warm up which I think has helped a great deal. I’ve gotten pretty good at the goofy most and feel rather comfortable with it. We again broke into 2 groups and Napoleon lead us in more exercises for foot work.
We started off with the breakdown of one of my favorite moves, the jump start. We walked slowly around on our...

Skates at Work?
Today I decided to wear my new dress and new heels. Here’s the thing, I never wear heels. I decided to try and adapt a more professional and adult look for work. Today however, I feel like a 12 year old who insisted on getting her first pair of heels. I’m completely off balance and feel like i need to move very slowly. I would rather be wearing my skates around then these heels.

My new obsession began around my birthday. I have been thinking and talking about doing roller derby for a few years now. However, I always had some excuse or reason why I couldn’t get involved. They were mostly reasonable and true but excuses none the less. The main reasons were school, work, and no skates. For my birthday my boyfriend bought me new skates. It was all over. We hit the rink...
